In 72 BC the eruption of the volcano Vesuvius destroyed and completely buried the ancient Roman city of Pompeii. The artist photographed this column, unearthed and standing, on which he placed a laurel wreath, a symbol of victory.
23.75 carat gold is used to gild the leaves of the laurel wreath. In doing so, the piece combines two of the artist's disciplines; photography and gilding, resulting in a work installed in a black frame.
